How Music At Work Can Improve Your Productivity

How Music At Work Can Improve Your Productivity

Nowadays, music is everywhere, even in workplaces. It's hard not to find someone with earbuds and a pair of headphones at their desk. Often you will hear people say when a job gets harder they find solace and motivation in music. These happen more in the millennial generation or the generation where people study while working and start working just after college. So is this true, does listening to music increases your productivity?

It turns out that music can be the inspiration in the workplace, but it also can be distractive, which is the case in many cases. Science shows that listening to music improves moods and help you to be more productive. According to Dr. Amir Sood, "melodious sounds help encourage the release of dopamine in the reward area of the brain, as would eating a delicacy, looking at something appealing or smelling a pleasant aroma."

Music therapy professor, Teresa Lesiuk also believes that "When you're stressed, you might make a decision more hastily; you have a very narrow focus of attention," she said. "When you're in a positive mood, you're able to take in more options." According to the research she did, employees listening to music completed tasks more quickly and had better ideas than those who avoided listening to music. This is because the music improved their moods, which motivated them.

What To Do When A Co-Worker Is Annoying You?

There are times lyrics can help you with whatever task you want to accomplish. For example, if you want to finish something that won't involve using words such as photography and designing, music won't hurt. Music is also excellent when performing repetitive tasks like sending emails, text and any data entry task.

On the other hand, listening to new music doesn't have the same effects. Studies show that complex and new lyrical music should be avoided. This kind of music demands for your attention because you try to learn and analyze the information in this music while still trying to work. However, different things work for different people, so it's always better to find what works for you.

Listening to music at work can be a blessing or a curse depending on the kind of song and the task at hand. Listening to music you like and you know well won't take much of your attention, but new or complex music takes your attention and might distract you from what you are doing. No matter how much you love music, at work, it's always better to be considerate.
