Difference between an Active Backlog and Dead Backlog

Before learning the difference between an Active backlog (also known as "Alive") and Dead backlog, it is important to understand the answer for this generic question:

What is a Backlog?

Though there are many theoretical versions answering the question, some giving detailed answers depending upon the Degree/Course being pursued, here is a generic answer that explains the term "backlog"

Any subject(s) that you have not cleared in present semester, that you need to clear it in the upcoming semester.

It is also easily understandable to us that the Total No. of Subjects that have not been cleared yet is equal to the Total No. of Active Backlogs.

Now zooming in a little more, there are typically two types of Backlogs.

One is an Active Backlog, while the second is a Dead Backlog.

Active Backlogs are basically the subjects in which you have failed and have not cleared/passed yet. Whereas Dead Backlogs are the subjects in which you failed and have cleared them.

Here's a Quick illustration that will help you understand the Difference between the two.

Now, that you've understood the difference between an Active Backlog and a Dead Backlog, try answering below questions to re-evaluate your learning.

Q.1: Ramesh had a few backlogs during his B.Tech during the Fifth and Sixth semesters. Now he has cleared all his Active backlogs and also completed his graduation. Presently he is looking to enrol for a Masters programme at a reputed university abroad. At the time of applying to the Colleges affiliated to this University, will these backlogs show up in his profile?

Q.2: Neha is presently in the second year of BBA. Due to some personal issues, she does not have required minimum attendance in one subject, so her college restricts her from attending the semester exam. As a result she needs to re-appear foe that particular subject. In this case, is re-appearing considered as an backlog?

If you think you really understood the difference between the two types of backlogs, try answering the above questions in the comments section below.
